NEW BEAT: CITY HALL

Q+A — MARIA VOUTSINAS has spent more than 20 years trying to get governments to listen. Now, she wants a seat on the other side of the table.

The executive director of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada jumped into the Toronto–Danforth council race after PAULA FLETCHER bowed out just two days before nominations closed. She’s one of 18 candidates vying for the open seat, with council heavyweights like DIANNE SAXE and ex-councillor MARY FRAGEDAKIS also in the mix.

The Queen’s Park connection: Whoever wins will have the Ontario Line — and residents’ complaints about Metrolinx — running through their mandate. I caught up with Voutsinas about making the leap, landing federal Liberal support and what happens when the provincial transit agency won’t budge.
